Featured projects

Climate Confidential

Erica Gies cofounded Climate Confidential in 2014 with five other journalists. This news startup covered the intersection of environment and technology, helping readers to understand how climate change impacts their lives and introducing them to people working on solutions. Startup funds came from readers and sponsors on Beacon Reader. Climate Confidential also funded local reporters, partnered with other publications, and hosted quarterly events. Erica Gies served as writer, editor, and business partner.

This Week in Earth

Erica Gies cofounded This Week in Earth, a micro-analysis news site that helped the reading public better understand important environment stories. She also served as the site’s editor-in-chief, selecting widely covered stories and cutting through the noise, illuminating when the media pack went astray, connecting related stories from around the globe, and highlighting important facts that were being overlooked.

This Week in Earth enhanced the environment story, while simultaneously raising the profile of environmental journalists — including a growing field of experienced freelancers. The site is on hiatus, following its successful six-month trial run in 2011.
